Introduction

This page introduces the vision, key objectives and benefits of this ground-breaking new project called the Rural Academic General Practice. It also contains useful resources and links to matters related to this project.

Vision

The WCDHB's vision of becoming a centre of excellence for rural health means we are leading the way in our developments on how rural health is delivered.

The co-location of our General Practice at Grey Base Hospital and the integration of Rural Nurse Training, Rural Hospital Medical and General Practice training are a first in New Zealand.

Key Objectives

The rural academic practice has three key objectives

  • First and principally, to provide comprehensive primary health services to an enrolled population both urban based as well as in rural community outposts
  • Secondly, to demonstrate by trial and development, potential sustainable models of care in primary practice utilising the range of available professional knowledge and skills and
  • Thirdly, to provide adjunct clinical teaching and supervision for rural and generalist practitioners undertaking academic clinical development pathways

Collaboration

Medical, Nursing and Allied Health training is only possible in collaboration with the wider health and education sectors.

This project is being developed in partnership with the University of Otago, The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and Health Workforce New Zealand.
