This Redevelpment Project section summarises the proposed redevelopment of Buller Health and Greymouth Base Hospital facilities.

Overview

Business Cases

West Coast District Health Board has now released the business cases for the proposed redevelopment of Buller Health and Greymouth Base Hospital. Both business cases propose the provision of much the same range of health services as are currently provided on the West Coast, but with increased co-operation with other District Health Boards in order to ensure their clinical viability, ensuring the ability to have and retain high quality staffing, both on and off the Coast.

Within the business cases released by the West Coast District Health Board, seismic strengthening and redevelopment of both sites is proposed at a cost of $87 million for Greymouth Base Hospital and $11.9 million* for Buller Health. The option of completely replacing the two facilities is considered but ruled out by the District Health Board due to the cost ($110 million and $18.1 million respectively).

West Coast District Health Board has been advised that the business cases have not been approved for funding this financial year. It is likely that the District Health Board will continue with its planning process, with the intention of re-submitting updated proposals in the future.

A new integrated Model of Care is now in place at Reefton Health. A separate process is underway, exploring options for the reconfiguration of the buildings, although no business cases have been produced for Reefton as yet.

Given the size of each case, they have been subdivided to make manageable file sizes.
