The Rugged West Coast

Introducing This Page

The West Coast is described as one of the most beautiful regions in the South Island of New Zealand.
Bounded by Kahurangi National Park to the north and Mount Aspiring National Park to the south, the region lies in a narrow band between the magnificent Southern Alps and Tasman Sea. It has a 600 km long coast line most in a natural state.

Untouched

Nearly two million hectares of rainforest and bush is protected conservation land. About 32,000 people live in towns, small settlements, rural areas and splendid remote places on old outwash glacial and moraine terraces that border the mountains.

Wealthy

The region's wealth lies in minerals extraction, dairying and tourism. Administered by one regional council, three local authorities and the Department of Conservation. The region is well served with harbours, airports, rail links and highways.

History

The Coast has a rich and long Maori history. Significant and ancient sites span its entire length, including those investigated at Mahitahi (Bruce Bay), Okahu (Neil's Beach - Jackson Bay) and the Buller River mouth.
