Information for RMO's
Rural GP Training Programme
The West Coast DHB also provides a tailored programme for RMOs who wish to choose the pathway of rural general practice. The programme offered provides maximum flexibility with the choice and timing of the runs. Upon completion of this training an RMO would have achieved their Fellowship with the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZGP) – www.rnzgp.org.nz.
This programme has been developed in partnership with the College and the Universities of Otago and Auckland. This programme enables those who enjoy the Coast lifestyle to stay on in GP training positions, and will in the long term create the rural workforce that this DHB, and other NZ DHBs require.
Resident Medical Officers (RMOs)
There are 7 RMO positions at our DHB and these positions comprise of post graduation year 2 or above. There is currently only one registrar based at the DHB, which provides RMOs with more hands-on experience and great one-to-one contact with the consultants.
The seven RMO positions offered are:
- 2 in General Medicine
- 1 in Obstetrics & Gynaecology/ Paediatrics/ Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation
- 1 in General Surgery
- 1 in Orthopaedics
- 1 in night relief run which covers the RMO who is on night duty and a general relief run which covers areas of need in times of sick or annual leave or the busiest area needing assistance.
Working In Support Services
Trades
We have trades staff spread over three sites. We look after buildings, beds, anaesthetic machines, sterilisers, boilers, electrical services, washing machines etc – the list is just about endless!
Our work is not just confined to these sites, we have clinical sites from Karamea in the North to Haast in the South. The work is varied and we never know what’s going to happen next. Never a dull moment here, there and everywhere!
Stores
We have a small team of three staff who look after all general and surgical products for the whole of the West Coast DHB. This also includes the supply of product for discharged patients so they can recover at home. Their job is a varied one, they receive product in from cartage firms, order product in, produce orders for you on request (so you can go and purchase your own product) and organise cartage firms to cart equipment to and from the hospital.
Laundry and Sewing
The laundry and sewing team look after all the sewing and linen services for the DHB. We manufacture items for the different departments to their requirements. Some of these have even been made from a description of the item to suit a particular need. The variety of work ensures the days are never dull. The staff are a great bunch and everyone in here knows how to do each of the laundering process. This is a busy department that is expanding through the commercialisation of our laundry service to include hotels and motels. We strive to keep the customer happy with the quality linen we process.
Transport
The department that has to produce vehicles out of thin air (so it seems at times!) for staff to carry out their work. We are responsible for getting the most out of the eight DHB pool vehicles, and managing the overall fleet of 120.
