Patient Care

Grey Base Hospital is the base hospital for the area with 100 beds. It is situated in Greymouth, the largest urban area on the coast. Based at the hospital are resident specialists providing care in general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, geriatrics and anaesthetics. Visiting specialists offer care and support in other specialties.

The two smaller outlying health centres in Westport and Reefton offer geriatric and obstetric inpatient care and care for a small number of medical and surgical patients.

Education And Professional Development

Despite its small size, the West Coast DHB is committed to being a learning institution. Our population and health services make the region ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate training. There is no centre with a population greater than 10,000 and our range of services offer a variety of service configurations in which to gain experience. Our community offers a wide spectrum of disease, a range of socio-economic circumstances and health care needs that are ideal for training purposes.

We provide training for a number of undergraduates, currently including 5th year medical students from Dunedin, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Therapists, Social Workers, Pharmacists and Dieticians.

There are postgraduate opportunities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the integrated training programme for this specialty and also in general practice.
