Dementia Care Unit Gets Green Light

The West Coast District Health Board is excited that Minister of Health Pete Hodgson and Finance Minister Michael Cullen have signed off on capital funding for a purpose built multi-million dollar Dementia Care Unit.

The new building will be located near the mental health unit at Grey Base Hospital.

Chief Executive Kevin Hague said the decision by the Minister's to sign off on the project meant the Board could now move ahead with building work.

"The DHB considers this a priority project and it is pleasing to now be able to move ahead and build a facility that will better meet the needs of dementia patients."

West Coast DHB Chairman Gregor Coster said the Board applauded the decision by the Minister's to fund the Dementia Care Unit.

Professor Coster said he was pleased the DHB would be able to provide dementia care patients with a unit that was specifically designed to meet their needs.

There are currently 20 patients remaining at the Seaview Hospital site and approximately 25 staff.
