Strike Action

The West Coast District Board today began notifying some elective surgery patients that their procedures have been rescheduled or postponed due to the planned industrial action by Resident Medical Officers.

The West Coast DHB today began sending letters to all those patients affected by the disruption.

The postponement of some elective surgery procedures will begin from June 8 and will continue throughout the period of industrial action.

The strike is scheduled to take place between 7am June 15 to June 20.

Chief Executive Kevin Hague said some elective surgery procedures scheduled for up to a week prior to industrial action would be postponed in order to reduce the number of people in Grey Base when the strike begins.

"If you do not receive a letter over the next few days notifying you that your surgery as been either postponed or rescheduled you should assume your treatment is still going ahead." Mr Hague said the DHBís priority would be to provide acute and emergency services throughout this period.

"Our first priority is to ensure patient safety."

In outpatients services will also be disrupted from June 13 to June 20 due to strike action.

Only oncology and neurology outpatient appointments will go ahead during this time. "It is important for patients to know that their appointments and procedures will be rescheduled."

Mr Hague said DHB was also writing to GPs and other affected health professionals to let them know what would occur.
