Careers at WCDHB

The West Coast District Health Board is this week taking part in the Careers Roadshow, which have been taking place in Hokitika and Greymouth, as part of its drive to attract young people to careers in the health sector.

"We are hoping to make young people aware that there are dozens of careers on offer at the West Coast DHB," Chief Executive Kevin Hague said.

The DHB has just under-1100 employees making it easily one of the largest employers in the region.

"We employ accountants, social workers, dietitians, physiotherapists, ISG professionals and of course doctors and nurses plus many more, making this a diverse and interesting place to work."

Mr Hague said the DHB wanted to let young people know they could have well paid, interesting careers right here on the West Coast.

"We are promoting the fact that people donít need to live in Wellington or Auckland to have career success, they can have that right here."

Mr Hague said DHB was looking to take a community wide approach to ensuring the future of the health workforce in this region.

The DHB is hoping to work with the West Coast Development Trust to develop scholarship opportunities for young people in this region and is also looking to work with schools.

"The West Coastís population is aging and as such their health needs will only increase, in order to ensure we can continue to meet demand for services we need to have a steady supply of young people entering careers in the health sector."

Mr Hague said the West Coast had long been considered a fantastic place to live for lifestyle and the DHB hoped more people would begin to recognise the work opportunities the region offered as well.
