Reefton Medical Centre Update

Please bear with staff at the Reefton Medical Centre, while the practice experiences a shortage of GP cover. Staff at the practice are doing their best to ensure that all patients are seen, however patients may experience longer than normal waiting times for appointments due to the decrease in GP availability since the departure of Dr Ashburner.

In the short-term - (next eight weeks) - there will be limited GP cover available in Reefton. Existing GPs from Greymouth and Buller will be providing cover. However, there will be days when a GP is not available. During this time we ask patients at practices needing repeat prescriptions to try and make appointments well in advance. When a GP is not available, nurses at the practice in Reefton will be available to triage patients and refer them to the appropriate service.

Medium term - (October/November) The DHB has contracted with two locums due to start work in late October early November. These locums will be working in Reefton only. Until this time we are asking patients to please bear with us.

Long term - The West Coast District Health Board has taken over the Reefton Medical Centre to ensure the town will have medical cover from now and well into the future. We are currently recruiting for GPs to work on a permanent basis in Reefton. In the mean time the West Coast DHB would like to thank all patients of the Reefton practice for their understanding during this time and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Please continue to contact the practice for your medical needs and staff can direct you to the most appropriate place for help.

The free phone Healthline service is also available 24 hours a day on 0800 611 116
