Buller Health Trust and West Coast District Health Board work together

A new oral health contact is bringing smiles to the faces of the Buller Health Trust and the West Coast District Health Board.

The Board and the Trust have signed an agreement that will see the Buller Health Trust managing the contract to provide oral health treatment to adolescents and those primary school children whose treatment is outside the scope of dental therapists.

This contract will provide surety of services in the Buller region. Previous contracts have been negotiated with individual dentists working in the Buller region, meaning once they left the service automatically lapsed.

The arrangement between the District Health Board and the Buller Health Trust now means that even if the dentist changes the contract to provide service for adolescents remains in place.

"We think this is a big step forward in helping to ensure young people continue to receive the oral health care they need," said Community Liaison Officer Vikki Carter.

"The Buller Health Trust is delighted to partner with the District Health Board in bringing much needed dental services to the youth of Buller," said Buller Health Trustee, Martin Sawyers.

"We have been aware that since the departure of Dr Burjor Landana over a year ago, there has been a gap in this service provision. With the recruitment of an excellent permanent dentist in Dr Kefilwe Tsheko, we are pleased to now be able to fill that gap - and any cavities too!" he said with a smile.

The Buller Health Trust is a charitable trust with the purpose of facilitating the provision of adequate health services to the Buller District in an efficient and effective manner. The Trust took over the running of the Westport Dental Clinic in December 2005. The Trustees are the Mayor of the Buller District and the Chief Executive of the Buller District Council.
