The West Coast District Health Board is pleased to announce it has secured the services of two midwives for the Kawatiri Midwifery Unit.

The DHB has been actively recruiting for some time and is delighted it has now employed two experienced midwives.

One midwife will begin on July 9 while the other joins the service on July 23. This will bring the service back to a full compliment of four midwives meaning it can once again reopen for birthing, on July 23.

Chief Executive Kevin Hague said he was sure the news would come as a relief to people in Westport.

"Our staff have worked extremely hard to get to this point.

"I would like to publicly acknowledge those staff who have worked tirelessly on recruitment and on providing maternity services in Buller and Greymouth," Mr Hague said.

He specifically wanted to acknowledge the support of Foote Ward medical staff for stepping into to provide cover and for supporting the remaining midwives.

He said the situation regarding Kawatiri Midwifery Unit was one where the DHB and community were in total agreement.

"The community wanted Kawatiri to reopen for birthing as quickly as possible and so did we."

Mr Hague said the recruitment of the two midwives also meant the handover of managing the Kawatiri Midwifery Unit from Greymouth to Buller was now almost complete.
