Grey Hospital rises to the challenge of a multi casualty accident

The recent motor vehicle crash at Kumara posed a number of challenges for the staff of Grey Base Hospital.

Having seven patients with moderate to severe injuries arriving in the Emergency Department put a strain on resources and a number of extra staff were called in to cope with the situation.

Additional nurses, doctors, laboratory, radiology and theatre staff were called in, and arrived willingly, to tend to the injured Indian tourists. Injuries were assessed and treatment initiated in a smooth and timely fashion.

As well as the clinical staff, receptionists, the duty hospital manager, the on call social worker and victim support were all able to assist the Indian group in coping with their situation. Having the whanau house available gave the group the opportunity to be close by without congesting the Emergency Department.

Grey Hospital rises to the challenge of a multi casualty accident.

One of the WCDHB staff called in to assist with the situation was Population and Public Health Analyst Dr Sandeep Reddy. His language skills combined with his clinical knowledge certainly aided good communication between all parties during what was a stressful time for those injured.

The patience of a number of other patients who also turned up at the Emergency Department was appreciated.

The contribution of all people involved towards a successful outcome was acknowledged in a debrief held late last week.
