Staff of Parfitt paediatric ward and the McBrearty and Kawatiri maternity facilities are looking forward in anticipation to the presentation, on Wednesday 12 November, of a cheque from the Fresh Future Trust.
During August and September stores from the Progressive Enterprises, including the West Coast's Fresh Choice and Super Value supermarkets along with Dick Smith Electronics were involved in fundraising nationally to support kiwi kids and their families through paediatric and neonatal healthcare at our hospitals. Thanks to the efforts of staff and the public a substantial amount of money was raised in this the second year of the appeal.
This year the West Coast District Health Board was fortunate in being invited to take part in the appeal and with that in mind Dot O'Connor, the paediatric Clinical Nurse Manager and Jude Bruce, the Clinical Midwifery Manager have put together a "wish list" that will enhance the healthcare of children on the Coast. The amount of money to be received will be revealed at Wednesday's presentation.
Amongst the items on the list include a new resuscitaire, designed to keep new born babies warm and provide all gases, etc. necessary for resuscitation in the maternity ward, reclining armchairs for breastfeeding mothers and to allow patients to stay comfortably at their child's bedside when they are in hospital, vital signs monitors and syringe and IV pumps designed to deliver small amounts of drugs over a time period. Also in the wish list is a sophisticated resuscitation manikin to enhance the teaching of newborn life support courses to health professionals.
The West Coast District Health Board is extremely appreciative of the efforts made by everyone in the fundraising process which will enable newborn babies, children and their families to enjoy an improved level of care on the West Coast.
