West Coast DHB and CPIT combine forces for new nursing initiative

Prospective students in the greater Canterbury and West Coast regions wanting to study CPIT's Bachelor of Nursing off-site, can now do so thanks to a new blended-delivery training scheme initiated by CPIT and the West Coast District Health Board.

A collaborative project for CPIT and the West Coast DHB, the pilot scheme offers students unable to commit to onsite study at CPIT in Christchurch, the opportunity to attend study blocks in Christchurch supported by periods of online learning. Most clinical placements can be arranged to be completed near their home base.

Dr Cathy Andrew, CPIT's Head of Nursing, says the pilot scheme will create future employment opportunities for those living in rural areas in the greater Canterbury and West Coast regions.

"The new blended-delivery programme enables us to work effectively with healthcare providers, by helping develop their future staffing needs. The scheme also helps students unable to commit to full-time, onsite study to successfully complete our Bachelor of Nursing programme," she says.

Dr Jane O'Malley, Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the West Coast DHB said, "The benefits for the West Coast and for the students are significant in that it allows people to study and live in their own community particularly in the second and third year of the course and at the same time will be more likely to encourage locally based nursing students to start their registered nursing career with the West Coast DHB."

The blended-delivery training scheme begins in 2010 and will be open to 25 Bachelor of Nursing students via special application.
